CHRISTMAS CELEBARATIONS AND CERTAIN FACTS.
Philip Verghese ‘Ariel’
Christmas is fast approaching. In December 24th night people the world over will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. This central event in history divided the calendar into B C (Before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini- “In the Year of Our Lord”). He was born to die. The meaning of His name is “He will save His people from their sins” (in Hebrew— “Jesus” means “Saviour” Matthew 1:21). The prophets foretold His birth years before it took place. Isaiah the Prophet predicted it in 740 B.C. (Isaiah 9:6, and 7:14). Prophet Micah also predicted the same event in 742 B.C. (Micah 5:2). Christ’s sufferings too were described beforehand by Isaiah
(Isaiah Chapter 52:13- 53:12). The very purpose of Christ’s coming to earth is to die for the sins of mankind.
The recent movement to replace the word Christmas by other names in America and Britain is an interesting development. In America the conservative argue that Christmas as become almost a dirty word in a politically correct society. The recent report says that almost the similar situation arising in Britain too.
In this connection let us look at the reality. What exactly the Bible says about such celebrations. The Bible has not given any importance to the birthday celebrations. The great Prophets of the Bible Job and Jeremiah have cursed their birthdays (Job 3:1-11, and Jeremiah 20: 14-15). In the whole Bible only two birth celebrations are mentioned, one in the Old Testament, that is of the Pharaoh, a heathen King and another one in the New Testament that is, Herod the cruel and ungodly King. On both these occasions some tragic events took place. On Pharaoh’s birthday, he hanged his chief baker (Genesis 40: 20-22) and on Herod’s birthday he beheaded a godly and innocent person ‘John the Baptist’, the forerunner of Jesus Christ. ( Mark 6:21-28).
But remembering Christ’s birth in a special way on a particular day of the year is certainly not a sin as long as it is done in the right manner and in the right spirit without bringing dishonor to God. But giving too much importance to that particular day is not good, because God had made all days equal and wants people to worship Him in the same tempo and manner on all the other days of the year as well.
Many celebrate Christmas without Christ in their heart. Unless Christ is born in the heart, no one can meaningfully celebrate Christmas and really experience the full joy of the occasion. Can Christmas be a celebration without Christ? With Christ dwelling inside, one can celebrate Christmas not only on 25th December but every day of his life.
At Christmas we tend to give much importance and priority to getting new clothes, decorating our houses, singing carols, preparing delicacies and savories. Often the main person, who is the cause of the celebration, is forgotten and out of the picture. We have no time or rather do not take pains to think about Him, His great teachings and His great sacrifice. Rather we take this opportunity to amuse ourselves and entertain our friends and relatives many times in an unholy way which brings dishonor to His name as well as to our faith. Instead, let us celebrate this awesome occasion in a worthy manner as the shepherds who were glorifying God (Luke 2:20) when they
received the news.
Jesus never asked his followers to remember His Birth instead he commanded his followers to remember His DEATH. This is very clearly mentioned in the book of Luke, …”And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying this cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you (Luke 22: 19 -20).” This institution is called ‘The Lord’s Supper’ , He has asked the believers to carry out till He comes again. Christians cannot neglect this institution, because it is His commandment. Christians are looking forward to the Lord’s glorious appearing the second time. Instead of wasting time, money and energy on merry-making and celebrations why not take the opportunity to tell others about His first coming and His very purpose for it. Let us make known the teaching of the Lord to many who do not yet know Him even after almost 2000 years of His coming. Weave into the celebration the great truth that Jesus came to save.
A survey says the greatest number of accidents takes place on the eve of Christmas . What does it shows? People go about it in an unworthy manner that leads to such number of accidents.

Let us wisely utilize our privileges.
by Philip Verghese ‘Ariel’
A famous Hindu pilgrim centre in Andhra Pradesh, The Tirupathi temple, (one of the highest pilgrim gathering places in the world) is in the news again. The film actor Amitha Bachen and his family get a special treatment from the temple authorities whenever he visits this temple. In the recent incident, after his son’s marriage the family members visited the temple with the newly married couple. For giving them special facility the authorities kept aside thousands of other devotees in dark. position. The old people, women and children all waited in the hot sun for hours together for their turn. The devotees agitated over the issue and there was a big commotion in the premises. The temple authorities recently made many changes for the devotees visit. Earlier the devotees are allowed to go very close to the deity and have darshan, but now for the security reason they made the distance to a 30 feet far. They have to be satisfied with that far vision of the idol. But here too the VIPs and VVIPs have some special consideration. Another temple in South, in Kerala, the famous Sabarimala Temple also was in the news recently in connection with the entry of women in the temple. The women devotees are not permitted to enter into this temple. A women devotee (that too a film actress) entered the temple in disguise a few years back and now the issue is raised up by someone and a big controversy is going on. Another important thing is that the devotees are allowed to enter in this temple ones in a year. The main gate of sanctum sanctorum opened ones in a year. Yet another temple in Kerala, The Guruvaayoor temple also was in the news recently. After the thread ceremony of the grand son of a Union Minister the temple poojari (priest) did a shudhikalasam/Punyaham (purification ceremony). The reason is that the minister’s wife was a Christian. Non Hindus are prohibited to enter into this temple. This becomes a big issue. Humiliated by this incident the minister’s family filed a case against the Poojari and the temple authorities for the ill treatment meted out to the minister’s family. What a tragic and sad situation the devotees of other gods’ face. These incidents are classic examples to their sufferings. One God will not allow women devotees, another one shows partiality towards their devotees. But how privileged we are as believers’ in Christ. Our God, who is true and living never, shows partiality. Rich or poor, VIP or non-VIP, men or women all are equal before Him. His believers have the full access to approach Him at any time. He the creator of this universe is always available to His devotees. What a wonderful God is our God. But the problem is that, we are not availing or utilizing this great privilege. It is our fault, not using the opportunity and looses the blessings Our Lord himself urges and taught His disciples the need or necessity of prayer. He said in Matthew chapter 6 “Pray, then, in this way: The famous prayer pattern of our Lord, which we can read in the following verses. (vv.9-13) Jesus taught His disciples to pray this way; it definitely shows prayer is needed and necessary. One should submit his needs before the Lord. Yes, we are His children, like a child we can go to His presence he loves to hear our voices. It pleases His heart. We can boldly go to His presence and submit our needs before Him, whereas others can’t. They go to their gods with fear and trembling. Our prayer to our God gives us an added advantage and assurance that we are not alone, He is with us, and we are His. Even though sometimes we face trials and temptations, it is in His presence we get comfort and consolation. In Psalm 23 we read like this “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I fear no evil; for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me”. (v.4). We believers have this peace with him. When crisis comes, we feel dejected and depressed. In such situation praising God is a bit difficult task. But it is possible. When the Holy Spirit over rules our hearts it will be an easy task. Even in difficulties we can rejoice in the Lord and praise God. Paul and Silas are a good example to this. Prison situations, as we all know not a pleasant one. But in such situation they rejoiced in singing praises to God. (Act.16:25) From such an unpleasant atmosphere Paul wrote some of his wonderful consoling epistles. He wrote to the Church at Ephesus. “Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father. (Eph.5:20). Again in another prison epistle he wrote to the church at Philippi: “Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say rejoice.” (Phil. 4:4). Only a spirit filled and spirit guided person can write such thoughts. The Devil our adversary loves and encourages us not to give thanks to God especially when things are moving in a bad way or in an opposite direction. But only the believers can face such situation boldly. Holy Spirit will empower us and guide us in such moment and helps us to go to His presence with our pressing needs. Nowhere have we get comforts except in His presence. Yes, only we, the believers have this wonderful privilege. For giving such an unfathomable privilege we must always give thanks to Him. Few of the many privileges we enjoy in Christ Jesus are:
- Any time we believers can approach our God with our needs.
- We have the privilege of growing in His presence. The greatest of all gifts the wonderful Word of God—The Bible—is in our possession which nobody else have except the believers. It gives us the comforting words every movement of our life, but we hesitate to utilize it for our peril.
- We are the only people who got the full assurance of Salvation which our God prepared for the world.
- We have the Holy Spirit indwells in us. It helps us to live a victorious Christian life on this earth.
Now we have to decide it for ourselves. Are we utilizing these great privileges for the utmost satisfaction of our Lord? Or are we neglecting it, and missing the opportunity God has given us? Yes, we are answerable to these questions. Let us not grieve the Holy Spirit. Mahatma Gandhi was once asked by a missionary. “What is the great hindrance to Christianity in India? Pat gave the answer, “The Christians” Dear brothers and sisters please think about this answer seriously, is it not true in many cases? The other day a prominent Christian leader of Andhra Pradesh who holds many responsible positions in Christian circles, while speaking to a special audience he said, “Present day, even in churches the leaders, Bishops, Pastors, Evangelists and Elders are at loggerheads for some unforeseen reasons”. Yes how true it is, we can see a cold war going on in between these Christians. What a tragic situation we Christians face in our community? How can we lead a victorious Christian life? The time is up. Let us grow in the knowledge of our Lord. Let us have His mind in us that is the only solution to all such problems. Let us pray for a total and great transformation even among us. Let’s wisely utilize these golden privileges which we posses. Let us draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. (James. 4:8) May God help us. pvariel@gmail.com
LET’S NOT DESPISE THE WORD OF GOD
by Philip Verghese ‘Ariel’
We live in a world, which is subject to changes. Every moment changes are taking place. What we see now disappears the next moment. Those who are in high places today are unceremoniously removed from there tomorrow. But in this transitory world, there remains one thing immovable. That is the Holy Bible, which we possess. But to our own shame and sorrow, we see almost everywhere an increasing tendency to belittle this priceless treasure—The Bible
This book contains the gracious words of Lord Jesus Christ; we should meditate it day and night. The first Psalm begins with the word ‘Blessed’. One godly man had described it as an introduction to Psalms, which he called God’s hymnbook. Whenever we hear the word ‘Blessed’ the thought that comes immediately to our mind is of ‘person who is perfect and self sufficient, having all things and is in need of nothing’. But in the Holy writ, this word is used in an entirely different connotation (context). It is used in relation to the word of God. In the Psalms and the gospels the word” blessed” with the same context is recorded several times. It is further clarified in Revelation 1:3. Many Old Testament saints, from Abraham are called “blessed” in the Holy Scriptures. But we, the believers are a congregation of blessed men and women, who are elevated to the height and pinnacle of it. Yea, we are a blessed people. This truth was made clear by the apostle Paul, while writing to the Ephesians (1:3; 2:7). A picture of our highly exalted position today can be viewed there. The entire joy of the blessed man in Psalm 1 is centered in the law of the Lord. He rejoices in God’s word as a man who happened to find a great booty (Psalm 119:162). It is a matter of great importance for us to know what the source and object of our joy is. Is it in the pleasures of the world? If so, it is only momentary. It is a joyful experience to find delight in God and His Word day and night. Such a man is compared to “a tree by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth its fruit in the right season; its leaf also shall not wither”. The benefits we receive from a tree are many. It has been estimated that a palm tree is useful to man in more than 250 things. It is also estimated that an ordinary tree inhales approximately 14000 liters of carbon dioxide, and exhales double the quantity of oxygen for human survival. Just as a tree renders selfless service, a godly man is obliged also to serve selflessly. Let us labour without any desire for benefits; God is the rewarder. The root of such shall be established in the word of God. They receive nourishment from it for growth and maturity. That will also cause blessings to many. Let us receive strength by being rooted in Christ and His word, like the tree planted by the riverside. Those who are not so shall disappear like the chaff driven away by the wind (1:4). Their way leads to destruction. We will reflect the divine nature by our constant communion with the word of God. Separation from the world is inevitable to receive blessings from God. At the same time, without their co-operation our lives will be miserable, as long as we are in the world. However, it is absolutely possible for us to live a life without absorbing the impurities of this world. How bitter were the consequences of being carried away into the world for Peter. He reached a stage where he had to deny his beloved Master. Peter who “followed afar off”, ended up sitting with them to warm himself. To be carried away into the world is a gradual process. Another example before us is Lot. He was attracted to this world by its greenery, and ended up most miserably. Believers should keep themselves away from the world. What is meant by ‘the world’ ? Whatever comes, as an obstruction between God and us is the “world.” It may differ from person to person. To some, it may be their fortune, job, children, family relationships and so on. In a world subject to changes, many storms and waves may lash against the boat of our lives. If the Lord is in the boat, we have no reason to fear. Let us grant priority to the Lord and His words. Let’s not despise it. Let us make sure that the Lord is in the boat. May the Lord help us.

SOME OF MY WRITE-UPS (PUBLISHED AND UNPUBLISHED)
Animal Right Activists and the Common Man
Apropos the letter ‘’stray dogs can be a menace” (Times of India. April 2) the writer laments over the killings of thousands of animals, birds and fishes by the non-vegetarians the world over to whet their appetite and called to open a flood gates for a country wide debate. Let us examine what the religious texts say about this. The Bible says God created all things for his (human) consumption. After the creation of the universe and the living things Lord Jehovah said to man “Every moving thing that lives shall be meat for you; even as the green plants, I now give you everything.” (Genesis Chapter 9:3). In the Ramayana Valmiki describes in many places how Lord Rama and Lakshmana secured food by hunting. Valmiki makes it quite plain that they had to subsist largely on meat. C Rajagopalachari in his Ramayana also mentions this: “Meat was not prohibited for Kshatriyas. Indeed it has always been the rule in India to permit any food legitimately obtained and consecrated as a sacrifice. Rama was a Kshatriya and he lived in the forest in the Kshatriya way, though abstemiously.” ( Ramayana Chapter 20). Obviously all living things exist for the human use. It is a universal fact. Why then this big hue and cry over it. God made everything for the human consumption. If we are not utilizing it we are just despising the God’s order. pvariel@gmail.com
Voyeurism Vs Elitism
Voyeurism Vs Elitism Newspaper Review Apropos the write up “Voyeurism Vs Elitism” (The Sunday Indian News Weekly) brought out a serious problem the channels are going to face because of their current activities. It’’s a timely warning to the warring channels. Unless they stop the present method (neck to neck fighting—sting operations etc) of colleting and broadcasting news, the noose will fall upon their neck and that will give a bad impact to the whole media including print. As Johnny Lukose of Malayala Manorama and Rajdeep Sardesai of CNNIBN rightly put it, “self regulation by the channels is better than a government censorship.” “It is high time that both the media (English and regional languages) should come to a term agreeable to each other,” otherwise it will give a disastrous effect on the whole media, which is not at all acceptable to the general public and will create an utter chaos. END
OUR COUNTRY OUR CONCERN
Your governance special issue (Sunday Indian News Weekly) brought out a clear picture of the India’s democratic system.. As the saying goes “Justice delayed is Justice denied. Even though our judiciary in the recent past made some land mark and courageous verdicts, its still rolling under the red tape and serving for the rich and upper class. We need to speed up the judicial process, especially for the downtrodden is the need of the hour. Dr. Malay Choudhuri rightly points out in his column , “Fill up 100% of all the vacancies and reduce the back log of cases by allocating a sizable amount and finalize the pending cases against the innumerable under trails still languishing in jails for years. Send this issue to the authorities for a nominal price and at least let them read and think about this serious issues facing by the common man. END
THE ENGLISH HINDI DRAMA
Rahul Dev’s ‘Rear window column (The Sunday Indian News Weekly), made interesting and serious reading. The writer rightly says that after 25 years Hindi will become the language of the poor. The growing tendency among the people of India shows that, but one should move along with the time and speed otherwise he will lag behind. In the past we have seen many especially the politicians showed an allergy to English and created confusion among the people and they send their children to the renowned English medium schools. Now the scene is totally changed and few come out openly in support of English. No doubt English is universally accepted as an international language. Most of the needed information in the field of science and technology, art and literature are mainly available in English. Countries like China, Japan and Soviet Union give importance to English and are making rapid headway in science and technology. These counties are aware of the realities of the time and understand that English is mandatory to achieve progress. To achieve progress in any field, English is a must. Instead of wasting time energy and money on hare-brained and ill-conceived ideas like endorsing Hindi or any other regional language in the place of English, the country needs an approach where the emphasis is on quality, only then can we progress and survive as a nation. END
Gender Curfew
Apropos the editorial ‘Gender Curfew’ (Times of India), the government’s select ban on women employees is a cruel decision. It concurs with a proverbial saying in Malayalam (Eliye thoppiche illam chuttu) that is to say ‘to rout or to show the anger towards the rat, someone burned the whole house’. That’s what exactly the government is doing now. No doubt the government has to face the relentless wrath of the people for its action. As you said, the government should find a feasible solution to the growing crime against the women folk. Instead of denying the constitutional equal rights to its citizen, they are supposed to give protection and safety to its citizens. What is now happening is ‘the suppose to be protectors are becoming enemies’. What a tragedy! What alternative the government can give to the number of employees out of job because of this ban? It’s a cruel joke played on the hapless employees of the state. Government should lift the ban immediately to decrease the growing tension among people. END
GLOBAL WARMING A TIMELY ALERT
Apropos of the write-ups appeared in The Sunday Indian Weekly. The writer Thomas Freidman sent a good warning signal to the US administration especially to the Head of the Country. At the same time this is a Big warning to the people all over the world. If the present life style continues, no doubt we will be caught up in this peril. It’s a surprise that cars, aircrafts, air conditioners, bulbs etc… And the way of life that causes the global warming. If we go at this rate the level increases and it will definitely be a great threat to the earth’’s species as well as human. The scientists warn that “the world has just 10 years to reverse surging greenhouse gas emissions or risk runaway climate change that could make many part of the planet uninhabitable.” This is a great warning. They conclude that unless mankind rapidly stabilizes green house gas emissions and start reducing them, it will have little chance of keeping global warming within manageable limits. The result could be a great destruction. The present alarming high rate of oil addiction is a great threat. It is high time that we need to think seriously for a Great New Deal, that we must start the action needed to reduce green house gas emission before we end up in disaster. We have to seriously consider our present way of functioning and to do something solid to curtail the global warming. The trees are an integral part of human race. The benefits we receive from a tree are many. It is estimated that an ordinary tree inhales approximately 14,000 liters of carbon dioxide, and exhales double the quantity of oxygen for human consumption and survival. Sad to say, these days even the civic authorities are cutting down trees in the name of development. But unfortunately, many do not know the consequences they are causing due to their negligent activities. The massacre of trees means putting an axe to the very existence of human race. No doubt, the continuous felling of trees will cause irreparable damage to the already perishing flora and fauna of our country. The need of the hour is to carefully plan and felling of trees. Let us create awareness among our young. Schools and colleges can play an important role in this awareness programs. Let us plant more saplings, trees can play a big role in our life.END
”Myth called Team India”
Apropos the news item Greg, Sachin split over batting slot and the ”Times of Ideas write-up by Boria Majudar ”Myth called Team India” (April 6). It is very unfortunate that the present state of Team India. First there was a rift between coach and players and then the internal rift between the players and then the so called ”attitude problems” all these factors lead India to a drastic position. Now the latest is the accusation remarks of Chappell against the senior players especially about Sachin that lead the exit of Greg. One cannot understand the logic behind the BCCI to keep the injured and unfit players in the team even after knowing their physical fitness. It is a matter of serious debate. The players” performance in the past may be good. But that alone cannot be the criteria to keep a player in the team. His present form, performance and the physical fitness should only be the criteria to keep a player in the team. Is it their access to the BCCI top brass they (the injured and the non performers) still find a place in the team? This should be thoroughly checked. No recommendation or political influence should be entertained in this serious matter; it’s a prestige issue of the nation. Now the controversial Chappell is out, likewise the wounded, tired, formless and sick tigers also should opt out to rest for their own good. Considering their fitness let them also retire gracefully to pave way for the younger generation. Reshuffle the whole system and keep only the genuine players those who are really interested in cricket not on their personal benefits. Also make a strict restriction to the players” contract with the advertising companies and agencies. Consider these facts seriously to save India from yet another disaster. When the team doctor and the coach know about the fitness of a player why then a soft corner towards such players? Let them not grudge against other and hang on like some old politicians do. BCCI should look for yet another experiment with the new generation young team India. As the writer said, “We need a performing Indian team, not a bunch of non-performers who were once legends.” END
POLITICAL LEADERS UGLY FIGHTING
The verbal attacks between the ruling leaders and the opposition leaders is common news these days. A healthy discussion is very essential, but it’s very unfortunate to note that in most cases such responsible people quarrel each other worse than local rowdies. The recent incidents happened in Andhra Pradesh state assembly even before the assembly session begins the verbal as well as physical FIGHTING started. It’s really an uncalled for situation. People elect these representatives to the parliament or legislative assemblies not to fight each other or treat one another as enemies, but to discuss and legislate on issues of state and national importance. But these days in state assemblies or for that matter in Parliament meetings there is pandemonium and utter chaos. The leaders suppose to show examples to their followers are fighting each other worse than little children. How sad it is, are we heading back to the ancient Age? END
ARE WE GOING BACK TO THE STONE AGE?
Apropos the report ”The Big Belittling” is an eye opener not only to the Bachchans” but also to many of the Indian celebrities. The intellectuals at same voice raised their concern to the degrading ritualism of the so called VIPs. As one of the intellectuals said, since the film personalities have many fans because of their role they played in the films, the fans especially the younger ones try to adopt their real life too, this is a very dangerous situation. Bachchans” should make note of this fact very seriously, to save the upcoming generation. It’’s really mad to marry a tree, even the illiterate think twice before taking such an action. What a great fall! Is he living in the 21st century? Or is he going back to the Stone Age? He should understand that nobody can bribe a God by putting a huge sum in hundies, sometimes it maybe a pleasing thing to the people around and may get some special VIP treatments from them at the cost of others. He must understand that all are equal before God. When will he realize his folly? When will he set apart some time energy and amount to the underprivileged of India? Mr. Bachchans, that will be a real blessing. I appreciate Outlook for bringing out such a report along with his father’’s poetry. Let Mr. Bachchan recall and recite and by heart the verses of his father’’s poetry “Madushala”, and let him at least now realize his folly and what his father’’s legacy was.END
Delhi Daiy Out Look
Apropos the Delhi DairyOutlook even though Mr. Mehta took the blame upon him for the publicity given to the moral police by his entire fraternity, he’’s still eligible for a Big appreciation from the readers for the firm opinion aired through his column Delhi Dairy—”Shifting them to the bottom gear.” Yes Mr. Mehta you and your counterpart made a big boost (by the supply of oxygen given publicity) to the moral police for their big hue and cry over the issue of Gere Shilpa episode. That was just an act in promotion to the awareness of a dreadful disease. What the hell happens in the land of the Khajuraho and Kamasutra by such a kiss in a stage act? It is very sad that the so called morality police are making a mountain out of a molehill, when the country is facing with so many burning issues these political hypocrites are shedding their crocodile tears in the name of silly things. By such acts they are becoming a laughing stock of the nation. What the moral police are doing on the so called people’’s representative’’s ugly and nauseating acts of human trafficking and the keep women activities. As you said, these publicity mongers should be given the original place where they should be. Keep them at the remote corner of the media, if necessary this will definitely make them withdraw from such unwanted act of agitations and propagation. End
ST. STEPHEN”S MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL
The article (St. Stephen’s Murder in the Cathedral, June 25) made a sad reading. His calculation and statistics are good, but at the same time he must make note of the fact that this meager number, (Source Wikipedia) makes a great impact on the Indian population. Statistics are very evident, Mr. Guha himself a history recorder or writer should once again go through the history record of the past and present, it will surprise him this meager numbers’ contribution or the influence on people all over the world. Even in India we are enjoying numerous good things because of this meager community’s sheer hard work and service. It is very evident in our day to day life. The author should again make note of the fact that this 2.3% population still hold the responsibility of around 25% of all primary education and about 15% of literacy and community health care. 25 to 30% of orphans and widows are cared by this community, around 30 to 35% handicapped people and lepers are looked after by this meager percentage of people. Mr. Guha this makes a big difference comparing the others. Why then this big hue and cry and anxiety over the allotment of admission in their own college? END
THE NEW PORNOGRAPHIES
The new Pornographies, Last Word, made interesting reading. Yes we live in a sex saturated society. On screens, stages, posters, pages of news papers and magazines all bombard us with pornography from every corner. Today’’s best sellers are yesterday’’s pornography. Some one has rightly put it; “Paperbacks as books with a girl on the cover, but no cover on the girl” The shades are up. Sex or pornography has been brought out into the open. Fiction writers, film and TV producers, newspaper columnists, TV personalities all have a great deal to tell us on the subject. The latest is that the advent of advanced cellular networks deliver the full motion video (Porno) from the internet to the cell phones. Times of India Newspaper Review
BITTER BATTER TOI
An Unfortunate Remark UPA Convener George Fernandez’’s Remark (BITTER BATTER Times of India) towards Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the nuclear deal is very unfortunate and an uncalled for one. People’’s representatives are send to parliament with a good purpose not to fight each other or to treat each others as enemies, but to discuss and find out solutions to the people’’s or the country’’s problems. Instead here we see whenever parliament meetings are called there will be some pandemonium and the house will be in utter chaos. The recent action in parliament by an educated Kerala MP too was very unfortunate. People’’s representative holding such esteem positions should not stoop to such level and make such actions and remarks. Fernandez remark reminded me of yet another statement made by an MIM MLA few years back when helmet rule was made compulsory in Andhra Pradesh, he said, “Smash the head of the traffic policemen if they Challan you for not wearing helmets”. How sad and pathetic that our so called representatives” statements on very serious and important issues. It is more moving that the support given to George by the BJP leaders, though he is an ally of NDA such statements and actions should condemn by every right thinking people. Are we heading backwards to the Stone Age?END
KHAKI DEVILS IN GOD”S OWN COUNTRY
Apropos the news item “Khaki devils in God’’s own COUNTRY (11th Feb.) made a shocking reading. Police forces are for the protection of the fellow citizens, but in many cases our police forces are found the opposite and far from efficient. They are regarded corrupt and oppressive and have utterly failed to secure the confidence and co-operation of the general public. We blame the British for whatever they had bequeathed to us—be it the railways or the police force. Even after many years of Independence our protective force is still behaving like primitive people. It is more shocking that such news came out from a highly literate state! What then is the condition of the less illiterate states? Police force is meant for protecting the interest of the general public, but it is a sorry stage that they are attacking the public for their selfish interest. The report says, out of the 50,000 police force 850 are facing criminal charges and only a meager number of 19 are removed from service so far, it still shows the pathetic condition of our administrative system. Why such delay in taking action against these corrupt policemen/women, (Note, that the figure relate to the period between 2000 and 2006), may be the question arises is “Who will bell the cat?” A few years back in South Korea a lock up death of a student forced the cabinet to resign and a new cabinet assumed power. The time is up, for the need of a total and drastic change in the present functioning of the police system for the betterment of the police as well as the country. END
ON SHOBHA DE”S COLUMN IN WEEK
This is in reference to Shobha De’’s “Bride’’s Father-in-law” (April 29). Much has been talked and written about the filimi wedding. De’’s one is a well thought one. The Indian media is still carrying their publicity even after getting the big jolt. That is the specialty of our media. Our paparazi’’s and the Journo’’s played a major role in these celebrities” present position and status, in return they received a big insult and pain in the name of “intrusion”. The Bachens” are fully well aware about their bahu’’s (The golden goose) worth, and what she is going to bring to the family through this marriage. Somewhere i read, her minute is worth a crore, after all she charged a whopping three crore for a three minutes performance at the 2006 commonwealth games in Melbourne. Knowing fully well of the golden opportunity to spin more gold out of the event Bachen’’s avoided the Indian media for a few extra bucks to a foreign agency. Mr. Bachen’’s betrayal to the Indian media shows nothing but his greediness for more. What a big plunge the celebrities sometimes make. Let the Indian media and the fans absolve them. P V Ariel
End of a sordid political chapter’
The Hindu Newspaper Review ‘End of a sordid political chapter’ (21st Nov. 2007) a fitting reminder to the concerned. It’s really amazing to note the quick action play, the politicians play in their life as well as in the lives of citizens. It’s really a sad affair among the so called ”Nethas” (politicians). People should teach a lesson to such power mongered chameleon politicians in the next election through their mandate. Let Karnataka be ruled by the Governor till these people face a new mandate. The father son duo played a lot with the lives of the people of Karnataka. Enough is enough. People should give them a fitting reply through their mandate. END
OUR CROSS TO CARRY
Your report ‘Our Cross to carry’ in the Sunday Indian Weekly is a clear picture of creating tension and turmoil among the peaceful tribals by the RSS/VHP activists’. The administration too is playing a communal card even in spite of the displeasure of the tribals. It shows the tribals are happy with their present status. The uneducated tribal’s statement, “I sold my land and got full payment. How can I take it back?” shows their good sense and ethics, which lack in the educated so called administrators. The missionaries are doing yeoman service to the downtrodden without any ulterior motives, it’s an undisputed fact. The testimonies of Asa Ram Bhumia (once a drunkard) of Ramna village, in Anuppur district of MP is yet another proof of a real convert. Real conversion takes place in the heart of an individual; nobody can force it on somebody. It makes marvelous changes in an individual’s life. Asa Ram’s testimony is a good proof to this, the changes and happiness he enjoys, he shared it with others and he led many to that happiness. An individual is saved from a wretched situation to a peaceful and joyful situation. How this can be an assault on the cultural moorings of India? Before putting a block to such humanitarian activities the local authorities should think twice the consequence of their actions. Can the authorities take care of the tribals as the missionaries do END
Shashi Tharoor’’s Column in Times of India
Shashi Tharoor’’s Column in Times of India Apropos the write-up of Shashi Tharoor on the subject
of Husain’s paintings and the responses from the readers. Its very sad to note that even after receiving such a lot of hate mail he still hold on to support the nasty narrations of Husain. He brought out yet another theory –Michelangelo’s David in support of his arguments to save Husain’s skin. He counts or views Husain in Michelangelo’s place, what a sad statement. The writer must note that David is not a god of Jews nor anybody worshipped him. He was only a hero of the Jewish people and of course people respected him, but not worshiped him as a god. Husain’s depiction of Hindu deities cannot be compared with Michelangelo’s David. In the name of art no artist can hurt the sentiments of people by portraying their deities in a salacious way. It should be condemned by all sane people. END.

Prasoon S Majumdar (Feature Editor, The Sunday Indian (Mr. Prasoon Majumdar’s column ‘Musings’) made a serious reading. It is really upsetting and shocking to note that we are wasting such a lot of food stuff which can be utilized for the benefit of 200 billion people of India. It is estimated that more than 30% of our total production of our food grains is destroyed by rats and pests. As a nation we are the largest producers of tropical fruit in the world, but our ways of handling it are still very primitive. The time period between the production and consumption are very large and our handling system makes it more delay to reach the consumers before it perish. The major reason for this wastage is our unplanned distribution system. When the final product reaches to the consumers it will change through many hands and everywhere there is a commission or margin, which leads to pay an exorbitant price by the consumers, at the time the original producers get a poor price. The only solution to this is to develop a healthy distribution system with the latest technology and infrastructure. Above all, find a solution to destroy the rats and pests which destroys a major portion of our food grain. This is done with a war footing way, since the rat population is increasing alarmingly. Let’s seriously rethink Mr. Prasoon Majumdar’s mom’s words, “if you dishonour food by wasting it then some day food would dishonour you’. Is not any remedy for this national wastage? Our think tanks and technologist/agriculturalist should think seriously to find a solution to this. Who is to be blame for this is big question left out. END
Maya’s Mayajaal
Apropos of the report on “Current Events” (Week weekly, Kochi) One two, three… “Mayawati’s deftness in bringing divers social groups together has triumphed. Maya’s Mayajaal did wonders in UP, throwing all the exit poll pundits’ predictions in the wind. Yes. She did her arithmetic of ‘cast politics’ well before the elections her new found formula worked out well. Of course Mulyam’s misrule of survival politics, the communal cards/CDs of BJP and the dress rehearsal drama of the congress paved way to Maya’s victory. She very cleverly utilized the opportunity to entice the marginalized upper casts into her fold. Very strategically at the right time she did her homework from the ground level whilst her counterparts did theirs at the board rooms, TV channels’ studios and on road shows. Now her turn has come to take the political revenge. Yes, the ball is in her court and she started dismantling the dubious schemes of the previous regime. Rich, mighty and famous personality’s skeletons (land scams etc.) are tumbling down one by one. It’s a good step to clean the entire system. Ordinary citizens’ are wonderstruck by the deeds of semi-god’s, business tycoons and political personalities. What a shame! Their deeds show the greediness of the rich and powerful. At the same time Maya should be more cautious and should not just waste time only to take revenge on her rivals, instead She should utilize the moment wisely and deliver the goods promptly to the people. If she does, definitely she can win more boundaries. Let her wisely use this social engineering strategy for the welfare of the ordinary citizens, it may work wonders and she can even jump across states and even to New Delhi. END
Wanted brand Gandhi’
Apropos the article ‘Wanted brand Gandhi’ (The Sunday Indian October 7, 2007) brought out the clear picture of the present India, and its relevance towards Gandhi’s principles and thoughts. October 2nd become a routine affair that the so called politicians preach their prepared messages and celebrate the day as a dry day and soon go back to square one. How sad it is to note that people of India so soon forgot or thrown back his ideals. Even in his own birth place he is an alien and the people miserably failed to follow his ideals and resort to riots and violence. The saddest story is that, his own family members, the so called grandsons are selling his personal life stories for a few pennies. Top among is Mr.Rajmohan, (it is better to delete the noble surname ‘Gandhi’ from his name). His recent book brought out his grand father’s illicit relation relationship with a lady (hitherto unknown to public). Like wise a good number of so called gandhians (Politicians) are selling the ‘Apostle of peace’ for their monetary benefits. As the TSI edit bureau said it’s not far that the 2nd October too will slowly diminish from the celebration and memory. END
Success Story’ physically challenged mentally tough
This refers the news item ‘Success Story’ physically challenged mentally tough. (The Hindu 17th November 2007) made an encouraging reading. Sai Prasad Vishwanathan’s sheer hard work and determination made him to succeed in all his efforts. History is full of names of men and women who”ve faced handicaps with an amazing courage. The life they lived, the energy they displayed and the lively spirit they manifested in spite of their deformities were both admirable and daring. “Disability is not a liability” so goes the adage. Many such courageous people proved this adage correct. They did not feel that to be born deformed or misshapen was gruesome, an affront to humanity, but they strove to fit into the world of normal people and in the process, put many to shame. The courageous words and acts exhibited by these differently abled people is really admirable one. The Success story of Vishwanadhan will definitely encourage and boost the confidence of not only the differently enabled ones but also the able ones. Sai Prasad proved that with a little support and encouragement they can show their metal better than the abled ones. Let his tribe increase. END
Your Anniversary issue (The Sunday Indian)
Your Anniversary issue (The Sunday Indian 14th October 2007) made a reminiscence reading. You made it outstanding with a good number of intelligent thoughts, at this happy occasion. It was indeed a great read. The 1922 Chauri Chaura insurrections to the 2007 Fratricide stories reveals the real identity of human nature. Those horrifying incidents brought out an answer to the big question—Are human beings cruel aggressive power-hungry by nature, wolves in sheep’s clothing? man even after tamed by social laws is often behaving like a jungle beast. Probably man is the only example of being which kills members of its own species wantonly. He has “progressed” to such and extent that killing is now a sophisticated art. The chilling terror of riots, followed by the ghostly silence of curfew, and then the bitter aftermath of prejudice and ignorance that leaves thousands of people homeless and thousands dead. This has been India’s nightmare since independence. Yet in the midst of this few men and women have dared to believe that India would one day be a peaceful country. Violence has grown and spread like wildfire. In the midst of the noise of shooting and killing, rioting and looting, the voice of secular India Gandhiji and others dreamed is strangely silent. END
Playing with Gods
Apropos the cover story “Playing with Gods” (The Sunday Indian 7th September 2007), the controversial poster issue is nothing but an issue created on a political vendetta within its own party. It’s interesting to note that this poster was released in February 2006 and now the issue is raised. The said poster is just a normal painting depicted Krishna’s famous “Raas Leela” As the story said; it only glorifies the rich culture of India’s tradition. How can this be a Hindu bashing? Instead it definitely boosts the tourism and promote India’s cultural heritage. Our politicians are very well aware about the sentimental feelings of Indians and they take advantage of such situation to fill their vote banks with the gullible citizen’s votes. When the election approaches, they (politicians) rake up some religious fiasco and try their level best to pull the strings to their sides. The voters of India should be more careful this time to study the situation and refrain from such politicians and their gimmicks. Let us wisely utilize our franchise to teach a lesson to such chameleon politicians. END
Film actor Mohanlal’s liquor comment
Apropos the news item on Mohanlal’s liquor comment, it’s really unfortunate to note that a reputed film actor like Mohanlal comment such unwarranted remark on the Keralites. How can he stoop so low and say “All Keralites drink.” On what basis he said that? How a Padmashree Award winner of this repute can utter such blemish in public. His drinking habit and acting for liquor advertisement is purely a personal matter but to cover his action he can’t blame it on all Keralites. This is very sad on his part; he must apologize to the people of Kerala and withdraw the statement at once. END
Where Next?
The cover story Where Next (The Sunday Indian Weekly, October 28 2007) made a gruesome reading. Violence has existed at every level since the beginning of human existence. First on a personal level then on a group level and later in history, a tribal level, then on a national level and ultimately on an international level. First act of violence is recorded in history is about Cain against his brother Abel. An act of premeditated treachery grown into the present existing level of terror strikes The terror, strikes at any moment at any where without an iota of any clues. How sad it is that even after many such serial blasts and terror attacks the administration is in still in a dilemma to find a solution to this serious threat. Innocent people are being killed in the name of religion and politics. It is very unfortunate that terror strikes become an order of the day. The administration should find a permanent solution to this effect and save the innocent victims from further peril. END
What a fall!
This refers the October 22nd edition of TOI. What a fall! Just for a film actor’’s daughter’’s elopement with her lover (a matured boy) you made a major head line and covered almost half page on the front and double than that on the inside pages for that sensational item ignoring so many burning issues the nation faces. How sad it is to note that a reputed news paper like yours allot such a lot of space to such cheap news. You should have shifted such stories details to your page 3 column or to the city pull outs instead of projecting it to the front page. It seems that film actors are ruling the roost pushing down all the national issues and leaders to a remote corner. How sad it is that we Indians are just after the actors and their gimmicks on screen. It is high time that we must think something big for the nation other than actors and their maayajaal on the screen. END
The Truth Gujarat (Tehelka.com)
Your Special issue (“The Truth Gujarat 2002) made a horrifying reading, Yes, indeed one of the finest in the history of Indian journalism. Ashish Khetan’s breathtaking investigations brought out the chilling facts in their own words that did the crime. Those truths brought out yet another answer to the big question—Are human beings cruel aggressive power-hungry by nature, wolves in sheep’s clothing? Man even after tamed by social laws is often behaving like a jungle beast. Probably man is the only example of being which kills members of its own species wantonly. He has “progressed” to such and extent that killing is now a sophisticated art. The chilling terror of riots, followed by the ghostly silence of curfew, and then the bitter aftermath of prejudice and ignorance that leaves thousands of people homeless and thousands dead. This has been India’s nightmare since independence. As you said in the editorial the so called shining politicians are only worried about their leadership and power. The power hungry politicians are only playing the tricks of vote-bank politics. This is very clear from the inactions of authorities even after getting many evidences against the guilty. Yes, the chilling violence is spreading its wings from Gujarat to Kashmir and to the uttermost part of this country. Violence has grown and spread like wildfire. In the midst of such blood throttling incidents our politicians are still on the run to firm their seats of power. How sad it is the position of the common man among such power hungry politicians in this greatest democratic country of the world. The common man is always suffocated in the hands of such dirty politics. Yet in the midst of this, few men and women have dared to believe that India would one day be a peaceful country. In the midst of the noise India Gandhiji and others dreamed is strangely silent, The reports very clearly shows Narendra Modi’s black hands behind those genocidal killings. No doubt he acted like a Nazi marauder. He must quit the position at once and he must be punished accordingly. That will be a lesson to such terror emanating politicians. Let the land of Mahatma be proud of his ideologies. END
“To make India Democratic & Politics de-criminalised, allow election voting through SMS
“To make India Democratic & Politics de-criminalised, allow election voting through SMS….(TSI 11th 2007) is indeed a great thought. An excellent idea, if implemented in its real sense, there is no doubt that, there will be a new dawn in the so called Indian democracy. The word democracy will definitely obtain its real meaning in Indian politics. But, who will bell the cat is the big question remains. Will our so called political leaders agree to this great thought is yet another question before us. There is not doubt that even if there are hundreds or more Rahul Gandhis’ enter into the political arena with clean mind and good intention, their surrounding system will either spoil them or will not allow them to act with a clean hand and a pure heart. How sad it is that our present political system is rooted in corruption, violation of law, and muscle power. As you said, due to this a major number abstain from voting. If the said system introduced fully and implemented in its full sense there will be a tremendous change in Indian democracy. Thanks a lot for the wonderful thinking cap END
Anil Kumble the Champion
The editorial ”Champion at the helm” is a fitting tribute to the highly respected cricket champion. The prominence you have given to this news item is highly appreciated. A long waited recognition from the BCCI, though a belated decision the board’s rethinking in the new selection trend is praiseworthy. As you said, Kumble will definitely get the full loyalty from his team mates. His declared priority, to take team India to the next step as a Test team and to create or develop a fearless environment for the youngsters tell it all. We celebrated yet another environment day on June 5, with lot of fervor and activities. News papers the world over published environment related articles and photographs. Some of the articles were so informative and educative. To put some extra caution, about the coming peril, the alarming global warming, I alerted my friends and relatives about the contents in some of the news papers on this serious issue. That information was really a timely alert and reminder to all. If the present life style continues, no doubt we will be caught up in this peril. Its upsetting news that cars, aircrafts, air conditioners, bulbs etc… And the way of life that causes the global warming. If we go at this rate the level increases and it will definitely be a great threat to the earth’s species as well as human. Another report says that “the world has just 10 years to reverse surging greenhouse gas emissions or risk runaway climate change that could make many part of the planet uninhabitable.” This is a great warning from the scientist world. The special issue brought out many solutions which all of us can follow in a measure. The trees are an integral part of human race. The benefits we receive from a tree are many. It has been estimated that a palm tree is useful to man in more than 250 things. It is also estimated that an ordinary tree inhales approximately 14,000 liters of carbon dioxide, and exhales double the quantity of oxygen for human consumption and survival. The truth is that it is more profitable to leave a tree standing than fell it. A recent study says that there is a direct loss of over Rupees fifty thousand per year for each tree that is cut. It is estimated that one tree yields oxygen worth thirty thousand rupees. If we fell trees at the current alarming rate, soon we need to install oxygen manufacturing units in every corner of the country, especially in the urban area which would cost a very high price that no government can afford. Tree absorb water from the ground, and then through transpiration, transmit this water to air as water vapor. Thus, they help maintain the atmospheric equilibrium. Another rupees ten thousand will be spent per tree on the other miscellaneous functions a tree performs preventing soil erosion, providing shade food, fruit and of course, fuel (provided by the dead branches and manure made of decomposed leaves). In short, the cost of replacing a single felled tree proves very expensive indeed! Just calculate the price of the several thousands of trees all over the world. Even the person who put his axe on its bottom, it gives them shadow till its fall. Another famous Malayalam poet wrote: “The one who pour water with a loving heart to the Banyan plant, when it grows it gives shadow to everyone who passes by”. Let the people who mercilessly cut the tree make note that the great danger they are causing, and let them plant yet another sapling in its place. The tree and its existence was part and parcel of human race from the very beginning. Religious texts too support this fact. Trees are so closely connected with human beings. Planting of sapling through school and college level will make a big difference to this great and serious threat of global warming. Let us make awareness programs in primary level to the university level. Ariel, Secunderabad
Khaki (Uniform of Policemen) devils in God’s own COUNTRY
In the recent times many fake swamis—sanyasis (Godmen) are under the police net in connection with the cheatings, distortion and amassing of unaccountable wealth. These people are taking advantage of the gullible believer’s ignorance. The superstitions among the people are forcing them to follow such fake godmen and women.
In the recent incident one Mr. Santosh Sivan (a so called swami) got arrested on many serious offense, further investigations brought out unbelievable activities of this man including rape and custody of minor girls etc.. After his arrest many such fake godmen’s and women’s are arrested in Kerala for illegal activities in the name of religion and belief. And many others are in fear for their so called spiritual activities in the name of god. The most shocking thing is that in the santosh sivan’s case some top police officials and even some politicians are in support to this so called swami’s activities.
This is was shocking news to the general public. Police force is for the protection of the fellow citizens, but in many cases our police forces are found the opposite and far from efficient. What then is the condition of the less literate states in India?
Police force is meant for protecting the interest of the general public, but it is a sorry state that they are giving a big helping hand to the culprits and antisocial elements who attack and even kill the public for their selfish interest.
A report says, out of the 50,000 police force 850 are facing criminal charges and only a meager number of 19 are removed from service so far. This still shows the pathetic condition of our administrative system. Why such delay in taking action against these corrupt policemen/women, (Note, that the figure relate to the period between 2000 and 2006), may be the question arises is “Who will bell the cat?” How can a reputed judicial system can close their eyes on such atrocities by the police force.
A few years back in South Korea a lock up death of a student forced the cabinet to resign and a new cabinet assumed power. The time is up, for the need of a total and drastic change in the present functioning of the police system for the betterment of the police as well as the country.
‘Aarushi: How not to investigate murder’
Apropos the write-up of Joginder Singh, ‘Aarushi: How not to investigate murder’ (June 26) brought out some more facts about our protecting force. Police force is for the protection of the fellow citizens, but in many cases our police forces are found the opposite and far from efficient. They are regarded corrupt and oppressive and have utterly failed to secure the confidence and co-operation of the general public. We blame the British for whatever they had bequeathed to us—be it the railways or the police force. Even after many years of Independence our protective force is still behaving like primitive people. The recent incidents in Kerala and other places are still shocking; the police officials are hand in glow with the fake swamis for their unsocial activities like rape and extortion of money.

‘Private Police’ The Need of the Hour
Apropos the ‘Musings’ “Private Police*Read full text below this write up. (TSI 12 October 2008) made a serious reading. As Mr. Prasoon S Majumdar said, no doubt, the private police force can not only ease the pressure of the present police force but also by the co-operation of the existing force much can be done. But will that be acceptable to the present police departments –Centre and State—? Unfortunately the sad part or the major setback in our police dept. is that they treat the common man as thief or criminal. If a person visits a police station to file a complaint, they look at him as a culprit. This is the general practice in most of the police stations in India. Vice versa it creates a kind of fear and the people look them as some terror figures. In many cases the common man or the poor will always suffer under their hands. This is against the basic principles of the police ethics or theory. This trend should go. The present system needs a tremendous change. Though the British wrote the Police Act in 1861 there were some commissions and proposals came up for reform, but nothing much has happened because of the negligence of our political leaders. They are least bothered since they always get VIP treatments here. The common man is always the victim to this system and politicians and rich always escape because of their money and power. The private police force with the co-operation of center and state forces can solve many problems India now facing. This will work only when all the three should have a mutual understanding and co-operation in tackling the problems irrespective of the political influences. The present ego of center state police and no political interference should be allowed. Will this happen in India is a BIG question to be answered. END
Private Police!!
Prasoon S. Majumdar
Editor, Economic Affairs
The Sunday Indian
Against the backdrop of bomb blasts and terror attacks, not only have most fingers been pointed towards our police force but there also seems to be intense discussions around restructuring the same. There have been talks like centralising the police force and to bring about coordination among various state police departments. No doubt, all these suggestions would invariably mean a more effective police network, but then the lacunae pertaining to security lapses lie somewhere else. According to latest official figures, Indian police is heavily understaffed – with some 1.5 lakhs vacancies! This also means that as a nation, we heavily fall short of the UN-mandated figure of maintaining a minimum of 222 police personnel for every one lakh citizens.
In fact, the problem is not just about lack of manpower. What is even more crucial is that the most sensitive and conflict zones of India have the maximum shortage of police personnel (Chhattisgarh – 7,000 and Jharkhand – 9,000 vacancies). On account of this shortfall, invariably most of the police personnel are overworked, and given the state of the nation, one can easily comprehend the conditions in which they need to work and perform. And needless to state, that the resources and equipment available to the force for combating all types of menace is not up to global standards (not even at par with that of the terrorists). Moreover, their responsibilities compound when the nation gets engaged in festivities and often lower the guard. In addition to this, the entire current police force is so politicised that the outcome is there are ad hoc duties and transfers, which have now become an inevitable part of the system. The stress and erratic duty hours (the concept of work-life balance seems to be absent) have been instrumental not just in alienating them from society and family, but also in reducing their social acceptability to a large extent. Starting from financial problems to family security, to bringing up their children, all are part of worries that a policeman needs to tackle. All in all, there isn’t any doubt that the department which is meant to ensure security suffers from a high degree of insecurity itself.
And when all of this comes along with a pittance in the name of remuneration, then the outcome is obvious – more than 50 per cent of total bribery cases filed in 2007 were against men in the khaki uniform!! Various researches state that today in the eyes of common man, Indian police is considered most corrupt – with as many as 80 per cent people interacting with that department have paid bribe for getting their work done. Police personnel are also found to be highly intolerant, abusive and at times, there have been cases wherein some have indulged in human rights abuse, rape, assault, murder (even of their own colleagues) and so forth. Probably for these very reasons, the state governments are failing to attract young educated men to join the police force. And thus the shortfalls remain and problems sustain. One wonders that after all, isn’t this the time to agree to the idea of private police forces? Why can’t we have private companies operating as police force for petty issues like passport verification, tenancy verification, loss and minor thefts? And complete surveillance of these companies can remain under the existing government police machinery. This would not only ease out considerable pressures from our police, and leave them with more time to more important things pertaining to national security but also go a long way in terms of tackling the shortfall.
